Most recently on diablog we had two posts about war and one about cars.
And that leads to the natural connection of the two:
Oil
Oil has been the defining resource of the last century. Most wars had something to do with it. And without cheap transportation our economy would be quite different.
I admit, oil fascinates me on many levels. If you have had the pleasure of working on an oil rig, you'd understand.
My long time fascination with oil lead me to visit a quite unique photo exhibition by Edward Burtynsky.
(I can assure you, we are not obsessed with everything -ynsky, it is a coincidence.)
Edward Burtynsky has been following oil around the globe and along its life span. I don't know of any photographer, who has done similar research and work.
From exploration, transportation, sometimes senseless use:
to its mostly sickening end:
The photographs are stunning, sometimes beautiful, sometimes disturbing.
But all are worth seeing.
You can do so until January 6, 2013, at the Taubmann Museum at 110 Salem Avenue SE, Roanoke, VA 24011. it is worth the trip.
Stay tuned,
Engine Room

Great photos, ER.
I will be on the next plane.
Actually going to Warsaw tomorrow morning and Vilnius in the evening.
Back to Vienna on Sunday. Monday to Mumbai and back to Vienna on Saturday. Sunday to Moscow.
No time to get bored.
Dear Smiles,
Try that without oil.
Edward has done great work in your neck of the woods, like in Baku, Azerbaijan, some of the "oldest" and craziest oil fields.
Have a safe trip,
ER
Unfotunately never been to Baku but plan to go there next year. Can you imagine, due to oil, there are even flights from Aberdeen to Baku.
