Free access to information, a free internet, is near to our hearts here at diablog. Thus, I gave you some information on internet censorship here.
Today I learned about a new censoring plan from within the EU government, which tops it all.
The "Council of the European Union" has a working group, called Law Enforcement Working Party (LEWP). LEWP met on February 17, 2011, the minutes are available at http://register.consilium.europa.eu/pdf/en/11/st07/st07181.en11.pdf as PDF file.
Here's the quote:
The Presidency of the LEWP presented its intention to propose concrete measures towards creating a single secure European cyberspace with a certain "virtual Schengen border" and "virtual access points" whereby the Internet Service Providers (ISP) would block illicit contents on the basis of the EU "black-list".This is an attempt to block all internet content, that the EU does not want you to read or see.
It is the equivalent of the notorious Great Wall of China.
If you are a EU citizen, it is time to call your representative and tell him/her what you think about censorship and Chinese style human rights.

This time, you are brilliant. I have been trying to understand all of this, and as usual you cut to the chase. I hesitate, however, as I do not know what a 'Schengen border' is - I have tried delphiniums and phlox, but this sounds better.
ReplyDeleteJoking aside, this is a really knotty problem. There are many sites that parents should worry about the content (for example, see my post on the foul video 'out of my comfort zone') and if you add certain extremeist etc rantings, the simple approach is to assume that common sense will prevail and only the 'bad' is forced out. But will it - this could become a blanket and also what about the sites within the borders. Please expand ER.
