First, my apologies for the grammatically incorrect title - all will be clear shortly!
Music has an infinite number of genres and one can spend years trying stuff to find the 'right' thing. As mood and circumstance can change direction in a flash, it is unlikely that only one type will do at all times, and in my case variation of both of these is constant leading to a truly eclectic play list!
Included in this is what I can only call 'Italo/American Big Band/Jazz/Swing' - heavens knows what iTunes would call it! Some years ago I was re-introduced to this by an excellent British musician of whom more later, but...
The original in this vein appears to have been Louis Prima who wrote a lot of interesting stuff and believed to be well in with 'interesting people'!!! Given his antecedents and the times at which he was well known in the US is not exactly a surprise! I hope that you will enjoy this weird clip which is not only him, but woven with one of his regular singing partners, Keely Smith (in the photo above with him), and spliced with real 1930's Betty Boop cartoons!
Much of his style was carried through in Italy in the '50's and '60's by Carosello Carosone and Marino Marini who both had hits outside their native land - the main probably being the latter's 'Marina, Marina'.
But, right now in the UK there is a superb 'band leader' Louis Prima lover with excellent musicians...
Ray Gelato, which is not his real name but taken, when first asked by a reporter, from a passing ice cream van...
...which really fits! Ray is part English and part Italian!
He, as an excellent saxophonist, has assembled around him some exceptional musicians with a love of comedy in music - the Giants, and together they make brilliant Prima covers and jazz/swing numbers.
They tour the UK and Europe, obviously in particular Italy, with their extraordinary blend of period music
including '50's classics
and playing real music to the highest standard
A lovely man, great musician and well worth, if you like it, investing in 'The Men From Uncle' cd.
Enjoy diablog, enjoy
